Personal Social Media Detox
Today social media has almost become a necessity. Whether it be Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, or Twitter; if you don’t have any social media accounts, you’re basically a ghost. But sometimes the posts, the likes, the retweets, it can all be draining and exhausting. Here are some tips to remind you that there is more to life than living through that Instagram lens!
Just like Hannah Montana said "nobody's perfect, I gotta work it!" Social Media can cause a lot of anxiety and stress, especially to the newer and younger generation. Trust me, I’ve been there. I am here to tell you, NO ONE IS LIVING A PERFECT LIFE. Sure Susan just posted a picture of her relaxing in a sunset at the beach in Maui. However, I’m 1000% certain Susan has a lot going on her in life that she isn’t saying right at that moment. No one is going to post about how they are stressed about work, overwhelmed with errands, or anxious about life overall. Many people are just faking it, till they make it. Understand that social media only shows the good things in a person's life not the bad. Try not to compare yourself to others. Theres a lot going on behind the camera. Sometimes more than you think. No one is perfect, not even Susan.
Take a Break
As stated perviously, social media can be make you feel anxious. Take a break. Whether it's a week, a month, or even just the weekends. Take a break from it all. I took a break from social media, meaning I deleted all my apps and blocked the sites on my laptop for 3 months. During that time, I focused on myself a lot. I stopped having this need to check my phone every 3 seconds. I started paying attention to my surroundings more. I created goals for myself. I overall freed my mind. Taking a break made me understand how much time I was spending on social media and how I needed to cut back. You’ll be surprised to see how much we are addicted to these apps. It won’t hurt to take time off for yourself. Personally, I felt mentally at a much better place and didn't feel so drained after my social media break.
You wouldn’t stay friends with someone you dislike, right? The same applies to social media. This might be a generational thing, but sometimes people will follow people they just don’t like. What the point of that? If you surround yourself with negativity, you will feel that negative energy around you. Even if it's online. Unfollow people who you don’t care about, don’t like, find annoying, etc. I like to call it a “friend list cleanse.” When you follow and friend people who you actually associate with or simply don't dislike, you won’t feel so negative. If you aren’t completely ready to unfollow someone, MUTE THEM. Muting means you still follow them and they follow you, but you just wont see their content. It’s like a half-commitment. You'll notice a big change when you unfriend/unfollow people from social media.
Numbers ain’t S*@!
Now if you’re someone who isn’t an influencer/blogger/business I have some news for ya, NO ONE CARES. The amount of likes and follows you have does not equate to any self-worth at all. Social media isn’t supposed to be a contest. Unless you’re some egg whose sole goal is to beat Kylie Jenner’s most liked picture, likes and follows mean nothing. Likes, follows, and retweets have become this measurement of social status throughout different social media platforms and it's just not true. Now if you’re an influencer/blogger/business, it makes sense. Your goal is to reach a large audience to sell a service, message, or product. But if you’re just you, don’t worry about that. Post your fire and bomb-a$$ selfie because you're feeling yourself. Do it for YOU, not to please others.
There are lots of good things about social media and just as many bad. Don’t let the bad control your life and overpower you. Stick to the good things and enjoy the quirks of it. Social Media has only been around for about 10 years. We are all still getting use to it, learning about it, and adapting to it. Don’t pretend to be someone else. Stay you. Stay true.
